Emporia, KS - September 25, 2024 – Riverside Elementary students shared their school year highlights with the Board of Education on Wednesday evening. Their presentation covered classroom achievements and school-wide efforts that are helping create a positive and thriving school culture.
The students talked about their participation in the Capturing Kids' Hearts program, which focuses on building relationships and creating a welcoming classroom environment. As part of this, teachers greet students personally each morning, and each day begins with a “Good Things” session, where students share positive experiences. The students also mentioned the social contracts created with student input in each classroom, which set expectations for how everyone will treat one another. They highlighted the monthly LeadWorthy character traits that promote leadership and personal growth.
A key point of their presentation was the success of the school's Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) initiative. This program focuses on three core principles: Be Safe, Respectful, and Responsible. These expectations are consistently reinforced throughout the school in classrooms, hallways, and common areas. Students are taught these behaviors and a reward system is in place to encourage and celebrate their success.
The students also shared details about this year’s family events. The first event, a back-to-school Open House, allowed families to tour classrooms, meet teachers, and learn about the various programs supporting student success.
Additionally, the students discussed their involvement in Team Building Activities, which promoted creativity, problem-solving, and collaboration. These hands-on challenges helped students develop teamwork and critical thinking skills while having fun. From building structures and launching designs to solving puzzles, each activity encouraged students to work together and think outside the box.
Riverside Principal Mrs. Emily Baker praised the students for their leadership. “Our students have fully embraced the values and programs we have at Riverside and it shows in everything they do. Their efforts with Capturing Kids' Hearts and PBIS have created a positive, respectful, and supportive environment. I couldn’t be more proud of them,” said Baker.
The Board of Education thanked the students for their leadership and dedication, recognizing their role in contributing to a supportive and collaborative school environment.
