Walnut Elementary Students and Staff Showcase Cultural Exploration at the Board of Education Meeting.
Emporia, KS - October 9, 2024 – Walnut Elementary staff and students presented an overview of their cultural exploration work during Wednesday’s Board of Education meeting. The presentation, led by members of the school's Equity Committee, highlighted the initiatives and activities aimed at promoting diversity and inclusion at Walnut Elementary. The topics were focused on their annual program, Walnut Around the World, an immersive experience where students, staff, and families explore cultures from across the globe.
The Equity Committee shared how their passionate work promotes a school-wide environment of cultural inclusivity, enriching the lives of not just students, but the entire Walnut community. Collaborating with key community partners, and with support from the Walnut Spanish Club, the committee highlighted the importance of embracing diverse cultures and creating an atmosphere where every student feels seen and valued.
A highlight of the presentation was the student’s reflections on the Walnut Around the World Night event. Students showcased what they learned about different countries and shared their favorite moments, which ranged from discovering new foods to learning traditions and customs from countries like Ecuador, Japan, and Nigeria.
"Our students were thrilled to explore different cultures and learn from one another. Events like these help us build a stronger, more inclusive school community," said Walnut Elementary Principal, Mrs. Jami Dakin, “Walnut Around the World is a cornerstone of our commitment to diversity and inclusion. It broadens our students' horizons and fosters a deep respect for the rich variety of cultures within our school and community. I am incredibly proud of our students and staff for their dedication to this meaningful work.”
The Walnut Elementary Equity Committee looks forward to expanding the Walnut Around the World program in the coming years, with plans to include even more cultures and deepen partnerships with community organizations. The school remains committed to promoting cultural understanding and creating a supportive environment where every student can thrive. Principal Dakin and the staff encourage families and community members to continue their involvement in these important efforts, as they work together to build a more inclusive and vibrant school community.
