Board Approves Joshua Swartz as Interim Assistant Superintendent of Business/Operations for Emporia Public Schools

Emporia, KS — The Emporia Public Schools Board of Education approved the appointment of Joshua Swartz as the district’s Interim Assistant Superintendent of Business/Operations during its regular meeting on Wednesday evening.

Swartz brings over two decades of educational leadership experience to the role, most recently serving as Superintendent of Chaparral School District in Anthony, Kansas, since 2012. His broad and strategic leadership background includes developing capital outlay plans, overseeing major operational initiatives, and aligning district services to support student success and well-being.

Dr. David McGehee, Superintendent of Emporia Public Schools, added, “With the timing of Mrs. Pam Stranathan's resignation to take a position closer to her home, we are very fortunate to have been able to hire someone of Mr. Swartz's caliber. Josh is an accomplished leader in education with strong experience in finance and operations. He comes to us highly recommended by those with whom he has worked.”

During his tenure as Superintendent, Swartz was responsible for overseeing district-wide operations, including budgeting, assessment, special education, early childhood programs, and implementation of Multi-Tier Systems of Support (MTSS). He is known for his collaborative leadership style, ability to leverage data for decision-making, and skill in building cross-functional teams to achieve results.

Before becoming superintendent, Swartz served as a middle school principal in the Lakin School District and as assistant principal and athletic director in the Renwick School District. He holds a master's degree in Education Administration and Supervision from Wichita State University and is currently pursuing his doctorate in Educational Leadership from Kansas State University.

In his role, he will provide leadership and oversight for the district’s business operations, including finance, facilities, transportation, food service, and technology, all with a focus on ensuring that services align with the district’s mission, vision, and goals.

"I am excited to join Emporia Public Schools as the Interim Assistant Superintendent of Business/Operations,” said Swartz. “I look forward to contributing my strengths and talents to support the district's vision and continued success."

Swartz and his wife, Tuanua, have four children who keep them busy, ranging in age from a high school junior to a first-year graduate student. The family is excited to become part of the Emporia community.

Swartz succeeds Mrs. Pam Stranathan, who recently resigned to accept a position closer to her home. He will officially begin his duties on August 4, 2025
