Emporia Public Schools Announces Positive Shift in Emporia High School Football Scheduling

Emporia, KS - Emporia Public Schools is taking proactive steps to strengthen the Emporia High School football program and enhance the experience of student–athletes by planning to transition to Independent Football Status beginning in the Fall 2028 season. This transition, which applies to football only, has the support of Athletic Directors across the Centennial League. Emporia High School will continue full participation in all other league sports.

Over the past several months, Emporia High School Athletic Director Beau Welch has evaluated opportunities that would better align the football program with schools of similar size and competitive history. After reviewing enrollment trends, participation data, and input from coaches and community members, the district determined that shifting to an independent schedule will provide a more competitive, balanced, and developmentally supportive experience for EHS student-athletes.

In recent years, Emporia High School has seen enrollment decline from 1,334 to 1,158 students, while several league counterparts, such as Manhattan, Washburn Rural, Topeka High, and Junction City, have significantly larger student populations. These differences have contributed to challenges in competitive balance and athlete development. As roster sizes have decreased, younger players have often been placed into varsity roles sooner than ideal. At the same time, some league opponents have reduced freshman and junior varsity competitions, limiting valuable opportunities for athletes to grow on the field.

The decision to pursue independent status also reflects strong community support for a structure that prioritizes student success and long-term program strength. Importantly, the Centennial League will continue to have the number of participating schools needed to operate as a conference, ensuring stability for all member districts.

Transitioning to an independent football schedule is a forward-looking strategy aimed at reinforcing the foundation of EHS football. It will allow Emporia to schedule opponents that better align with the program’s size, resources, and developmental needs, helping build confidence and stability for students from middle school through varsity levels.

“We want our student-athletes to have every opportunity to grow, compete, and succeed,” said Welch. “This positive move reflects thoughtful planning, strong community support, and a commitment to providing a meaningful and rewarding high school experience.”

Emporia Public Schools will continue to keep families and the community informed as the transition progresses. The district appreciates the support of the Centennial League and the dedication of coaches, families, and student-athletes who show resilience and pride in representing the Spartans.
