Data-Driven Decision Making

Emporia Public Schools Conducts Data Dive to Strengthen Instruction and Student Support

Emporia, KS - Emporia Public Schools continues its commitment to improving student learning through data-driven decision-making. At the November 12 Board of Education meeting, district administrators shared a presentation titled “Spring 2025 KAP & FastBridge Data Dive,” focusing on how educators analyze and use assessment results to support every student.

The session, led by Ms. Sheryl Leeds, Interim Assistant Superintendent of Teaching, Learning, and Student Services, and Dr. Ryan Karjala, Director of Assessment and Accountability, outlined a new Data Protocol designed to help staff review student data with a focus on equity.

“Our goal is to move beyond numbers and really understand what the data tells us, and what it doesn’t,” said Leeds. “This process helps teachers identify meaningful next steps for instruction and ensures we’re engaging all students in learning.”

The Data Protocol encourages educators to discuss trends, reflect on practices, and take action steps aligned with each school’s improvement plan. By focusing on both outcomes and opportunities, the district can better support its students in need of additional support and close achievement gaps.

The presentation also reviewed FastBridge assessment participation for high school students, clarifying which students are tested in reading and math each semester to ensure consistent monitoring of progress and support for student success.

“Data is one of our most powerful tools,” said Dr. Karjala. “When used collaboratively, it helps us strengthen instruction, challenge assumptions, and plan for meaningful growth.”

Emporia Public Schools will continue to use these discussions to guide instructional planning and foster student success across all grade levels.
