Military Families

About Us

At Emporia Public Schools we serve students from preschool through high school, including adult students seeking high school diplomas later in life. The district has a new early childhood center for 3 and 4-year-olds, six neighborhood elementary schools, one middle school for grades 6-8, one high school for grades 9-12, and the Flint Hills Learning Center for adult learners. All K-12 students are provided with a Chromebook. The district is finalizing construction projects that were made possible when voters approved a $78 million bond in November 2019.  Each school received upgrades and safety enhancements as a part of the bond.

Founding City of Veterans Day

Emporia, Kansas, holds a unique place in American history as the founding city of Veterans Day. The holiday traces its origins to 1953 when Emporia residents, led by local shoe store owner Al King, advocated for the recognition of all veterans—not just those who served in World War I. Inspired by the sacrifices of local soldiers, King worked with civic leaders and Congressman Ed Rees to propose the idea at the national level. Their efforts led to President Dwight D. Eisenhower signing a bill in 1954 that formally established November 11 as Veterans Day, honoring all U.S. veterans. Emporia's initiative transformed the day into a nationwide tribute to the courage, sacrifice, and service of America's military men and women.

Purple Star Recognition

On November 13, 2024, the USD 253 Board of Education Passed a resolution declaring our support for educating students of military families in accordance with the Kansas Purple Star School Recognition Program. This program is designed to help schools respond to the educational challenges military-connected children face during their transition to a new school and keep them on track to be college, workforce and life-ready.
