Hi! My name is Kay Schmidt! I started teaching at Walnut in 1999. I enjoy teaching in the primary grades. I have taught 1st, 2nd and 3rd graders for the past 15 years.  I love to teach the children at this age because they are so curious and ready to learn.
In my classroom, students have opportunities to do lots of creative writing and plays. One of our favorite class projects is a bake sale. After our unit of study on money, we put our change counting skills to the test by having a school-wide bake sale! This gives the kids a great hands-on experience with money, and it’s a great way to assess their money skills!
Second grade classes also enjoy yearly trips to the Beeman Ranch in Madison, the Roga Pumpkin Patch, the Geology Museum at Emporia State University, and The Nutcracker ballet in Topeka. We have lots of fun in 2nd grade!
