Welcome to the Walnut Computer Lab!  We are very fortunate to have a full time computer lab with 30 PCs at Walnut Elementary School.  In addition to the computer lab, each classroom has at least 2 computers.
Kindergarten students have one 30 minute session each week in the lab.  Students in grades 1-4 attend two or more 30-45 minute sessions in the computer lab each week.  Grades 3 and 4 are in the lab every day.  We have a wide variety of educational (and entertaining)  programs for the students to use including network versions of Jump Start, Math Blaster, and Mighty Math for all age levels.  Kid Pix offers opportunities for creativity.
Walnut technology instruction includes a strong emphasis on learning proper keyboarding technique.  Students use the "Type to Learn 3" program to learn typing skills.  Orange keyboard covers called "speed skins" are used, so students learn to type using the "home row."  In May of each year, we have a typing contest for 3rd and 4th graders in the lab.  The winners receive awards.
Students also receive instruction in Microsoft Office programs.   Word is used for typing spelling words and writing projects.  PowerPoint is used frequently for special projects.  Publisher and Excel are also used on occasion.  Classroom teachers attend the lab with their students and provide instruction.  A full time technology person is available to help with technical problems.
In addition to the full time lab, our school also has a wireless mobile lab furnished with Dell laptops.  Teachers check out the mobile lab for classroom use.

Mrs. Harbaugh provides technical support at Walnut Elementary.  She works in the computer lab sometimes.  Other times, she helps in other areas of the building with computer and technology problems.  Mrs. Harbaugh is also the "unofficial" school photographer.  Another of her duties is to maintain the Walnut Elementary School web site.  After school, Quest computer classes are also taught by Mrs. Harbaugh.  She has worked at Walnut Elementary since the fall of 2000 and has been with USD 253 since 1993.
She is married and has 4 grownup children and two grandsons.  She also has a dog, and some cats .  In her spare time, when she's not on her computer,  she likes to spend time with her family, sew, read, garden, and take photos.  Her educational background includes attending Emporia schools, ESU, some vocational computer classes, and many years of hands-on computer experience.  When she was in school, her favorite subjects were math and science.
She says this is the best job she's ever had because there is something new to learn every day!  She especially enjoys working with the staff and students at Walnut.
