Joe Morris graduated from Emporia High School in 1930. During his high
school career, he played football, was president of his sophomore and senior
classes, and was a member of the Honor Society and Hi Y.

After graduation, he excelled as a civic leader in Emporia, serving as mayor, city
commissioner, and a member of the Board of Education, Planning Commission, Board of
Zoning Appeals and Newman Hospital Board of Trustees. He also was president
of the Emporia Chamber of Commerce, the Rotary Club and the Current Club.
He was a leader in the United Way and helped bring industry and Interstate 35
to Emporia.

His nomination states the Mr. Morris was a leader for all the right reasons. He
genuinely cared about people. Personal gain or personal recognition did not motivate him.
He served with kindness, friendship and good humor.
