Introduction To Computers

100 (semester, 1/2 credit) This course is recommended for all freshman students.It is designed to develop skills using a word processing program to format business decuments. Emphasis is also given to language arts skills, work habits, perosnal career assessments, alphabetic and numeric keyboarding.

Computer Applications I

200 (full year, credit by semester)
This class is designed for students at the sophomore level or above to develop computer skills necessary for success in academic and workplace enviroments. Students will work with Word, Powerpoint,Excell and Access. This class fulfills the one credit of Computer Technology for qualified admissions to Kansas Regents institutions.

ELL Computer Basics

000 (semester, 1/2 credit)
This course is designed for the student with minimal or no computer exposure in order to develop basic keyboarding skills emphasizing the touch-typing method using a word processing program and keyboarding software. Emphasis will also be given to basic language development, simple Internet skills, document formatting and general career awareness.

Business Technology

300 (semester, 1/2 credit)
Prerequisite:Office Adcanced Microsoft Office or Office Technology 1 with a minimum of a "C" grade OR Computer Applications I with a minimum of a "B" grade and teacher approval

This class introduces students to skills, knowledge, and technology desirable for entry-level employment into a business office. units covered include: telephone skills, office procedures, records management, business calculations, business careers, seeking and applying for employment and integrated software projects. This class is required for enrollment in the Business Technology internship (IHT) class.

Desktop Publishing

300 (semester, 1/2 credit)
Prerequisite: One full year of Computer Applications I and a minimum "C" grade.

Acquaints students with graphic design techniques, principles of page layout and design, desktop publishing terminology and applications using Adobe PageMaker.

Accounting I

300 (full year, credit by semester)
Prerequisite:A student must maintain at least a "C" grade in math classes before enrolling in this class.

Introduces the student to accounting concepts, career options, and the accounting cycles of a proprietorship, partnership, and a corporation. Accounting business simulations will be completed.

Computerized Accounting II

400 (semester, 1/2 credit)
Prerequisite: Accounting I with at least a "B" grade.

Training the student desiring a career in an area requiring accounting with special emphasis directed toward accounting procedures utilizing the computer.

400X (semester, 1/2 credit)
Teaches consumer needs of the following areas: free enterprise system, purchasing of consumer goods and services, consumer rights and responsiblities, banking, savings and investment programs, insurance programs, taxes, credit, and budgeting.

Prerequisite:Basic introductory business courses and instructor approval.

Individualized independent study for concentration in a part of a course being offered. This course can be repeated for credit.

Business Technology Internship (In-house Training)

400X (full year, credit by semester)
Prerequisite: Two business credits with a minimum of a "C" grade. One credit from Computer Applications I, and 1/2 credit from Business Technology or Office Technology II and 1/2 credit from another business elective. Teacher approval form required

Students will complete projects for EHS faculty, staff and businesses in the Emporia community using advanced features of Microsoft Office Professional software as well as other software as needed. It will also include the instruction and use of peripherals such as digital camera and scanner. Students will interview secretaries, teachers, and business people for each project to determine specific needs. Possible tasks include: tables, mail merges, mailing labels, newsletters brochures, flyers, calendars, worksheets using formulas and charts, database queries and reports, PowerPoint presentations, web page and in-house computer file management.

Internet Communications I

300 (semester, 1/2 credit)
Prerequisite:One full year of Computer Applications I with a minimum grade of "C".

Basic introduction to the operational and technical aspects of computer communications. Explore the uses of bulletin board systems, electronic mail services, Internet, and communications services. Students will also learn HTML and basic web page design principles.

Prerequisite:Internet Communications I. Must have an approval form from the instructor.

Students will learn advanced HTML skills and will be introduced to Java Script, Adobe Photoshop, Flash MX, and Microsoft FrontPage.

Entrepreneurship

300 (semester, 1/2 credit)
Explores the personal characteristics and resources needed to profitably start and run a small business. Includes the basics of planning, organizing, financing, starting, operating, and managing a small business venture in the free enterprise system. Students may do a business simulation, develop, and run a business.

Skills for Business

100 (semester, 1/2 credit)
This course will introduce the student to a variety of entry-level business skills and occupations needed to acquire and retain a job. Through business modules, students will become familiar with the skills essential for employment in business and throughout life. Some activities will require individuals working together as a team to complete a task. Topics emphasized include: career exploration, steps to obtain a job, work skills, entrepreneurship, accounting, and on-the-job training.

Visual Basic Programming

400 (semester, 1/2 credit)
Prerequisite:Geometry and Computer Applications I

This course teaches students how to plan and create interactive Windows application programs. Students learn the basics of the programming language VB to construct computer programs that are applicable to today's business world. Students work through the easy-to-follow textbook completing challenging problems and projects. Group work is required to collaborate on unit projects. After completing the basics of this programming language each student with complete their own projects such as the snake game and/or pong and present it to the class for use.

Advanced Microsoft Office

300 (Semester, 1/2 credit)
Prerequisite:One full year of Computer Applications I with a minimum grade of "C".
Students will learn advanced features of Excel, Access and Word. Units covered will include: linking and embedding, using and analyzing financial data and design concepts. Students will develop their own personal and promotional documents. Integrated projects utilizing multiple programs from the Microsoft Office Suite will be completed.

Marketing

400 (semester, 1/2 credit)
A marketing class will introduce students to the process and functions involved in transferring business products or services to consumers. Areas that will be explored will be foundations of marketing, consumers and their behaviors, external factors, the marketing mix, marketing research and marketing planning.
