Grant F. Timmerman Elementary School
Timmerman uses a scientifically research based approach for its core reading instruction, the Imagine it, by Open Court, published by Science Research Associates. This approach helps students to become independent, fluent readers and writers through exposure to specific skill instruction. Core reading instruction has five basic components:
Math Trailblazers is a research-based program that includes math, science, and reading skills. Students using Math Trailblazers are actively engaged in real-world situations to practice problem-solving strategies. This program includes a balance of group work, individual work, and whole class instruction. Students practice their problem-solving skills by using hands-on approaches. Manipulatives, calculators, pictures, graphs, data tables, and numbers are used throughout the program to assist the students in becoming proficient problem-solvers. Math Trailblazers utilizes a spiraling curriculum where students return to skills and strategies throughout the year and across grade levels in a variety of contexts. A special website to assist parents in helping their children with Trailblazer homework assignments is linked from our home page.
Student Assessments
DIBELS: A one on one screener assessment which evaluates students on their reading skills.
This test is given three times a year.
Kansas State Reading,Math, and Science Assessments: Scores are compared across the state. These tests are given in the spring to third and fourth graders. Only 4th grade takes the science assessment.
Fountas/Pinnell Benchmark Reading: This assessment is given quarterly to students by our teachers to determine a student's reading level to assess quarterly growth.
MAP: Meaure of Academic Progress, are computerized assessments given three times a year to all students in both Reading and Math curriculum areas. Teachers use the data from these tests as another indicator of academic growth and to plan specific instruction.
RESPONSE to INTERVENTION
Timmerman Elementary teachers closely track a variety assessment data for their students and have a systemic process, called Response to Intervention (RtI), which is followed when students experience learning difficulty in a specific reading or math skill. In this process, students are provided prescriptive instructional interventions in specially formed small learning groups for at least 30 minutes of every school day. Student learning within these groups is closely progress monitored to determine when the students have met their benchmark and are exited. The learning groups are changed as often as needed to accomodate student needs.
Professional Learning Communities
All Timmerman teachers are part of a Professional Learning Community (PLC), which consists of a grade level cadre of teachers who regularly meet together two and a half hours weekly. During their meetings, they work together to plan instruction, exchange ideas, examine specific student data, determine RtI student skill groupings, brainstorm solutions to address student remediation and enrichment, and much more. We feel that the team approach is the best way to work most effectively to achieve a positive impact on our students. The PLC process is similar to a team of doctors working together to diagnose and treat their patients. PLC's are a team of experts working together, not individuals working in isolation. Our teachers think in terms of, "Our kids," not "My Kids."
Respect Motto
I am respectful no matter what is happening around me!
School-Wide Discipline Policy
All Day Kindergarten
Emporia Public Schools believe an all day kindergarten program is the most beneficial for students. Beginning in the fall of 2004, the district made a commitment to establish and maintain an all day program available for all students in the Emporia district. Timmerman students experience complete reading and math programs. Teachers are able to continuously teach concepts and ensure student mastery. Students have numerous opportunities to learn new knowledge and review previously learned material. This all day program provides opportunities and experiences that prepare students for future academic learning and success.
Timmerman Mission Statement
"It is our mission to enable all students to reach their highest academic and social potential by providing a quality education through a variety of challenging experiences in a caring environment, with the partnership of students, staff, parents, and community."

Timmerman Elementary is named for an Americus native, Grant F. Timmerman. Sergeant Timmerman was posthumously awarded The Medal of Honor with Citation, The Bronze Star, and The Purple Heart for his selfless act of heroism.
