lp10 Kids With Character Exploring Character in Literature and Life/ This lesson introduces the character traits of responsibility, courage, perserverance, and kindness using the texts Keep the Lights Burning, Abbie, and Garden Gates. Students will develop an understanding between character and success by examining characters in literature and reflecting on personal experiences. Students will also be able to identify and define selected character traits, explore character traits presented in literature and make connections between strength of character and successful story out comes, and will work in cooperative groups to compare the story Now One Foot, Now The Other to Thunder Cake and identfiy character traits that the two stories have in common.

5B Demonstrate the ability to manage anger in constructive ways.

It's My Life . Friends . When Friends Fight | PBS Kids GO! This lesson introduces the technique of talking to a friend that has hurt you. Teachers can download an "I message Worksheet" that can assist students in identifying and dealing with their feelings.

It's My Life . Family . Sibling Rivalry . You vs. Them | PBS Kids GO! This web page offers suggestions for students who are experiencing trouble with a brother or a sister. There is a downloadable journal page that allows children to record their experiences and thoughts about the situation. There are also fiction and non-fiction books that address the subject of sibling rivalry.

 

5C Utilize stress reduction techniques to deal with daily academic and social situations.

MEH0201 Being Brave and Dealing With Fear./ A lesson that uses the story The Brave Little Monster to help students to learn how to be brave when dealing with fear. The student learns to identify different types of fear, and talk about appropriate ways to respond to different fearful situations. / Educator's Reference Desk
