Mrs. Meyer's class wins award

Last April, Mrs. Meyer’s 3rd grade class participated in and WON the Emporia Wal-Mart Earth Day Challenge 2009.  Her 3rd grade students collected plastic shopping bags from family, neighbors and friends.  The students brought them to school and had to count and bag them in groups of 25.  Mrs. Meyer would take them to the service desk at Wal-Mart to turn them in for the contest.  She had to make many trips because her class collected more than 5, 200 plastic bags.  The purpose of the contest is to reduce the amount of plastic shopping bags that are going into the land fills.  To reuse this plastic reduces the amount of oil needed to produce more, as well as energy savings in producing less.  It takes a plastic bag 1,000 years to decompose in a landfill.  Today her class was awarded a check for $1,000.00 from Wal-Mart.  The money will be used to begin a recycling project at Village Elementary.
