School History

portrait of Sgt. Grant Timmerman Timmerman Elementary opened its doors on the northwest corner of Emporia in the fall of 2003. We serve Kindergarten through 5th grade students. Timmerman Elementary is named for an Americus native, Grant F. Timmerman. Mr. Timmerman was a sergeant in the Marine Corps who sacrificed his own life to save the lives of his tank crew while serving on the island of Saipan during World War II. Sergeant Timmerman was posthumously awarded The Medal of Honor with Citation, The Bronze Star, and The Purple Heart for his selfless act of heroism.
