                                     Evening classes require a minimum enrollment for class to be held.

Purpose/Mission:  The mission of Flint Hills Technical College Adult Education Center is to provide a diverse community of learners with educational  opportunities for personal growth and preparation for professional and civic responsibilities that meet the needs of society. The Flint Hills    Technical College Adult Education Center has many programs to help students gain the skills they need in order to advance to higher education, obtain better employment, improve workplace skills, or experience personal achievement.

 Services Provided:     

•ABE (Adult Basic Education) – Reading, writing and math classes are taught to assist students with job preparation and entry into GED classes or post-secondary education.

•GED Preparation – Offers full preparation for the GED test. Passing the GED exam will result in a Kansas Board of Regents High School Diploma

 •ESL (English as a Second Language) – Adult ESL learners focus on understanding English through a variety of activities, which include reading, writing and conversation. Guest speakers from the community provide information about life and employment in the United States. The computer lab is available for ESL learners and is equipped with a variety of Internet resources and educational software to enrich the learning experience. The Center also offers instruction to assist in obtaining Citizenship.

•Adult Literacy Classes – Students may participate in the Emporia Literacy Program, which provides them with an individual volunteer tutor to help them improve their reading, writing, and consumer math skills. The Emporia Literacy Program is jointly sponsored by the Flint Hills Technical College Adult Education Center and the Learning Connection of the Flint Hills.

 Population Served:  Students must at least 16. Students who are under 18 must have parent permission and withdrawal paperwork from a local high school.

 Eligibility:  Students who meet the above requirements must be deficient in some educational area. This includes lacking a high school diploma or adequate English, reading, writing and math skills.

Cost/Fees:  Programs are free of charge.

Purpose/Mission:  NIOSH is the primary federal agency responsible for conducting research and making  recommendations for the prevention of work-related illness and injury. The agency was created to help assure safe and healthful working conditions by providing research, information, education and training in the field of occupational safety and health. NIOSH is part of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in the Department of Health and Human Services.

Purpose/Mission:  To help people with disabilities become gainfully employed and self-reliant.

Services Provided:  VR plans emphasize individualized community-based services, integration and consumer choice. Services may include vocational assessment; counseling and guidance; physical and mental restoration; training; rehabilitation technology; job placement, supported employment, and transition planning services for students with severe disabilities.

Population Served:  Individuals with a disability.

Eligibility:  An individual must have a disability, as defined below; and require VR services to prepare for, secure, retain, or regain employment. An individual with a disability is someone who has a physical or mental impairment which constitutes or results in a substantial impediment to employment for the individual; and can benefit from VR services to achieve an employment outcome.

Cost/Fees:  Based on the individual's available financial resources, rehabilitation services requires an eligible individual to help pay for some services.  However, the following services are available to all eligible individuals, regardless of their financial resources, without charge: assessments to determine eligibility and VR needs; vocational counseling, guidance, and referral services; and job search and placement services.

Purpose/Mission:     Committed to empowering young adults for lifelong success through quality training

Service Provided:     The Flint Hills Job Corps Center is a federally funded vocational training program for young adults ages 16 - 24 who want job skills for employment. Training is set up for students to progress at their own pace. In addition to the vocational training, the campus offers basic education classes, GED classes, a High School diploma program, advanced training and college programs.

Population Served:  Young adults ages 16 through 24

Eligibility:  To qualify for Job Corps, you must:

  • Be at least 16 and not yet 25 years of age at the time of enrollment.

  • Be a U.S. citizen, U.S. national, permanent resident alien or other alien who is authorized to accept permanent employment in the United States.

  • Have limited financial resources.

  • Have signed consent from your parent or guardian if you are a minor.

  • Must be in need of further vocational training, education, or support service in order to participate successfully in the work world.

  • Have a child care plan if you have a dependent child.

  • Show commitment and capability to participate successfully in Job Corps and gain the benefits of the program.

Population Served:  Individuals age 18 or older who have been unable to attend a tradition high school for a variety of reasons.

Eligibility: Students making application to Flint Hills Technical College must have graduated from high school or received a General Education Development (GED) Diploma. In addition, high school juniors and seniors may concurrently enroll at Flint Hills Technical College.

Purpose/Mission:     The goal of the Migrant Education Program is to ensure that all migrant students reach challenging academic standards and graduate with a high school diploma (or complete a GED) that prepares them for responsible citizenship, further learning, and productive employment.

Service Provided:     Assists schools with English as a Second Language (ESL), bilingual education, reading and math programs for migrant students; provide free breakfast and lunch for students at school; a bilingual home/school/community liaison helps families access services in the community.

Population Served:   Migrant families and children.

Eligibility:  Any family member who has worked or is presently working in a seasonal temporary agricultural job as defined by the federal government.  Families qualify for three years from the last qualifying move.
