Service Provided: Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Flint Hills, Inc. is a non-profit corporation that seeks to promote positive youth development through a variety of prevention programs designed to reflect and enhance the unique strengths of each child and family. Youth involved in our program are between the ages of 5 and 17 years and reside in Chase, Coffey, Lyon, and Morris counties. BBBS provides positive role models who offer friendship and support to children who come from all social, financial, and ethnic backgrounds. Ongoing support and enrichment are provided by the professional staff for parents, children, and volunteers. Services are free.

Service Provided: Professionals assess a child’s general growth and development once per year in the spring. The screening includes hearing, vision, health, thinking and reasoning, balance and motor skills, speech and language, self-help and social skills. The results may point out areas that need attention, such as eyesight, hearing, or communication skills.
Eligibility: All children under the age of 21 years.
Cost/Fees: The screenings are free.

Eligibility of Service: To qualify for Health Wave you must be under the age of 19, be a legal resident of Kansas or have proof of legal alien status, and meet the income guidelines.
Services: Health Wave is a low or no-cost medical coverage for Kansans. There are no exclusions for preexisting health conditions or problems through regular checkups, or minimizing their costs through early diagnosis. Prenatal services are also covered under Health Wave.

Infant-toddler service providers are itinerant staff and provide services in the child’s natural environment. The amount of time is determined by need during the evaluation process. Infant-toddler services are offered year-round.
Service Provided: valuation, family service coordination, parent information, physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech and language therapy, early intervention services
Eligibility: creenings for possible delays are available for all children. If delays are indicated, a complete developmental evaluation is done to determine if the child meets the eligibility criteria set by the Kansas State Department of Health & Environment for infants and toddlers. Evaluations may include assessments in the following developmental areas: nutrition, motor, behavior, speech, language, vision, hearing and play/thinking skills.
Cost/Fees: All special education and related services are free.

Eligibility for Services: Parents must be residents of Lyon County and meet approval by Board of Trustees.
Services: To provide medical care for children of Lyon County when families are not financially able to provide medical care, dental work, eyeglasses, etc. Sadie Jones worked in Emporia for many years. She became deaf and wanted her estate to be used to help deaf and blind children in particular.
Application Procedure: Application forms are supplied to city and county school nurses. Applications are presented to the Emporia Community Foundation.
