Dual Language Education in Emporia
A Unique Educational Experience
Emporia students have the opportunity to enrich their language through a Dual Language Program for students K-5.
Dual Language Program
The Emporia Public Schools implemented Dual Language education in 2001 and classes are offered from kindergarten through grade 5 at Village Elementary.
Dual Language classrooms mix English-speaking and Spanish-speaking students and both groups of students work toward the common goal of becoming bilingual and biliterate in a shared learning environment.
Program Model and Goals
Emporia’s Dual Language Program uses a 50-50 instruction model which provides students with equal instruction time in both English and Spanish. The English instruction is delivered by an English teacher and the Spanish instruction is delivered by a bilingual teacher. The goal is for each class to have equal numbers of English-speaking and Spanish-speaking students. Children in the Dual Language Program use the same curriculum as their peers. The goals of the program are:
- Students develop higher-order thinking skills as they learn a new language in a natural setting.
- English-speaking and Spanish-speaking students develop proficiency in both languages.
- All students are expected to master the state standards in all core subjects.
- Students acquire multicultural awareness and appreciation.
Research shows that students in a Dual Language Program outperform their monolingual peers academically over time (4 – 7 years). And, of course, they also know how to speak, read, and write fluently in a second language. In an expanding global marketplace, knowing a second language is increasingly important. Research has consistently demonstrated that the best time to learn a second language is before the age of 10, when the brain is most receptive to this type of learning.
Dual Language enrollment at Village Elementary is open to both native-English and native-Spanish speaking students. Parents who choose this educational option for their child are asked to commit to this program each year in order to realize full, potential benefits. Parent involvement is especially important to create an environment that is open at nurturing, and addresses every aspect of each child’s education.
Students interested in attending the Dual Language Program should call or visit Village School and fill out an application.
