EMS Math Club Students Introduced to ‘Math Magic’

math_magicEmporia State University math professors Dr. Brian Hollenbeck and Dr. Qiang Shi, kicked off a new math enrichment program last week at Emporia Middle School. Their presentation, “Math Magic,”  baffled the audience with various card tricks and later shared the math principles behind each trick.

This event launched a new math enrichment program at EMS for incoming 6-8th grade students, according to Laura Albertson, gifted services teacher. The program begins this summer with a math camp at ESU.

Next fall, students in the math club will meet once a week to work on math problems and applied math activities to prepare them for math competitions, Albertson said. “They will also learn about careers and current work being done in the field through guest speakers from surrounding universities,” she said.

The “Inspired by Math” program is a joint effort between Emporia State University’s Math Department and Emporia Middle School’s Junior Spartan X-tra after school program. The program was made possible due to funding from the Dolciani Math Grant.
