EHS theater students excell at Thespian Conference
Emporia High School theater students attended the Kansas State Thespian Conference this month in Wichita. Theater Director Megan Sturm said 34 student attended workshops and five from the group competed in individual events.
Maya Ballester qualified for the International Thespian Conference in Lincoln, Neb., in June. She also auditioned and was selected for the All-State Musical, “James and the Giant Peach.” This is Kansas’ first year to have an All-State Show.
The Theatre Department Tech Turnups team place third at the competition. The team included: Mason Polston, Chris Lyon, Osmin Magana, Ashley Mitchell, Sadj Davis and Corrine Payton. Mason and Chris placed first in Leg a Platform; Mason placed second in Lighting; and Osmin and Ashley placed third in Prop Shifts.
The theatre troupe also received a Gold Award for their Honor Troupe. Sturm said the award is given to groups that have completed the necessary amount of shows, community service and fundraising hours, and demonstrated increased student involvement.
The conference is geared toward improving student’s theatrical and technical skills through workshops, competitions and watching shows from across the state, Sturm said.
