Board Policies – Section J – Students
JFB – Promotion and Retention
It shall be the policy of the Board of Education to encourage and assist each student to progress in a continuous growth pattern of academic achievement in harmony with normal intellectual, social and emotional development through a tiered system of supports/interventions. Circumstances surrounding the promotion or retention of a child will be a team consideration including the individual child’s parents. The best interest of all students will be the guiding philosophy for determining promotion or retention. Retention is not an intervention option, but an end-of-year alternative considered when multiple interventions throughout the year have been unsuccessful in addressing a child’s learning needs. A decision will be based on sufficient data, collected over a period of time and motivated by the desire to place the child where he or she will be most successful in school.
